Innovative and unique way to use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)
Sharper Shape has successfully installed pulling lines for installing conductors for one of the largest utilities in the US and is believed to be the first drone company to successfully install lines for a transmission project of this size. The 765-kV transmission construction project involved successfully tripping the massive “PacMan” mechanism and stringing pulling (“sock”) lines between newly constructed towers. The sock lines installed with Sharper Shape’s heavy-lift drones were used to pull in final steel conductor pulling cable. The potential to save lives and reduce costs compared to the current method of using manned helicopters makes this service an important application for Sharper Shape’s drone technology.

The Unique A6
For transmission line construction, Sharper Shape uses the very capable Sharper A6. The stability and lifting capability of this purpose-built drone make it the obvious choice for these projects.
Sharper Shape’s advanced software is not used in this application. Pulling in sock lines requires extremely skilled manual flying with a very powerful UAS – such as the Sharper Shape A6.
As a critical first step to installing high-tension cables for new transmission line construction, this service safely installs conductor pulling (“sock”) lines. This is not a small issue – there are approximately 1.5 deaths per year from helicopter crews trying to perform this function. Sharper Shape has the aircraft equipment and pilot expertise to perform sock line pulling with maximum cost effectiveness and with no risk to the manned aircraft pilots.
